SOUTH BALTIMORE
Locust Point in Baltimore is the site of the Experimental Design Competition (EXD). The challenge is
to transform an afforestation project at the Francis Scott Key
Elementary/Middle School in to a living laboratory; exploring ideas about
planting design (community composition, spatial arrangement, etc.), school
greening (educational performance, social interaction, etc.), and landscape
performance through the lens of a design experiment. The afforestation project is part of a local brownfield redevelopment that required the removal of on-site vegetation at 900 East Fort Avenue. With city approval, the design team arranged to mitigate the replacement planting locally at 1425 East Fort Avenue; allowing the trees and resources to stay within the immediate environment. The collaborative effort presents a model for enhancing urban ecology and design practice.
